Yishensu Klang – A Meatless Banquet Experience

Vegetarian food …… Over in 3 years of writing food blogs, there are only 1 post which I write about sole vegetarian food. My first vegetarian food post was at Kechara Oasis during their press launch. They are level 1 hardcore vegetarian restaurant which doesn’t serve onions, garlics, eggs and also milk. Most of the foods were pretty tasteless to a meat lover like me.

All those thinking and perception changed in my mind set upon dining in Yishensu.

Klang BBT One Flagship Outlet

This restaurant is currently managed by the second generation of the family which has operated for more than 23 years in vegetarian business. The business got started in Kampar, Perak and then branched out in 2007 where they opened their first branch in 1Utama shopping mall at Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Then later on Klang outlet was opened at the end of last year. This 2 branch is considered as their flagship restaurant now as it focus more on promoting more vegetarian foods where everyone can accept a meatless meal according to Jason Wong the person incharge.

I will go into both of their restaurants but in 2 different post as both of this restaurant serve different style of vegetarian food. Let us begin with the Klang Bandar Bukit Tinggi outlet.

Modern Interior Design which doesn’t have any worship statues which commonly available in vegetarian restaurants

We were greeted with a glass of Rosella Flower drinks upon seated. It is said that this flower is very good for health where it can reduce blood pressure, make your more pretty and few other effects written on their pamphlets. You can buy it home and make your own drink at home too.

Rosella Flower Drink Rating at 4/5

The drinks doesn’t have any sugar added or other ingredients. It is just the flower alone mix with plain ice water and stir. The taste were pretty special and refreshing.

Not long after that, the main course were presented in a big bowl where it easily feed 8 persons. I was so surprise were served POON CHOI! Click on the link for Wiki explanation.

Vegetarian Poon Choi – Rating 5/5 at RM168 which serves 8 guys (eat a lot) and 10 for gals (Advance Booking 1 Day Needed)

I just couldn’t believe my tastebud upon sipping the gravy. It is exactly the same taste like meat version! We started off by eating the deep fried battered mock prawns. I dare to bet if you close your eyes and I put this in your mouth. You will definitely say this is a real prawn. The Poon Choi come in 12 type of ingredients and were arranged in layers then steamed. There are mock abalones, sharks fins, pork, black mushrooms, monkey mushrooms, yam and many more. I just couldn’t help it and made another reservation at the end of the session for having it in 1Utama for my colleagues farewell dinner.

Curry Chicken Bread Bowl Rating 4/5

The bread were home made by chef Ho himself. The curry chicken were concealed inside the bread and baked together. The chef actually will help you cut it open when served.

yishensu klang - 09
Chef Ho cutting open the bread bowl.

Chef Ho is the master chef of Yishensu’s Kitchen for Klang and 1Utama branch. He himself is a meat lover and he did a lots of research to replicated the actual dish to vegetarian version without losing the taste, texture and look. The food that he invented is not like those vegetarian mix rice type where everything is just plain stir fried vege.

yishensu klang - 10
The gravy of the curry chicken does not leak out to the bread and were concealed with wax paper

yishensu klang - 11
The texture of the mock chicken were exactly like real chicken breast meat. The curry powder mix used also is just perfect.

yishensu klang - 12
Vegetarian Assam Fish – Rating 4/5

The taste and texture of the fish is like the real one. The gravy goes very well with white rice and it is served on hot plate where you can see the curry still sizzle upon served. The gravy and the fish is very addictive.

yishensu klang - 14
Nestum Prawns – Rating 4/5

Battered fried and with mixture of curry leaves and nestum on top. Just tasty !

yishensu klang - 15
Great on taste minus the real fresh prawns heavy price tag!

yishensu klang - 18
Golden Brick Bean Curd – Rating 5/5

From the outlook, it just looks like an ordinary of fried bean curd laden with special sauce when served.

yishensu klang - 19

Served with broccoli, baby corn and pea

yishensu klang - 22
The secret within! There are mushrooms, water chest nuts and a few other diced ingredients.

Vegetarian Fresh Prawn Noodle – Rating 4/5

This plate of noodle is only taste nice when serve in Klang outlet. I’ve tried it 2nd time in 1 Utama and it doesn’t taste as good even though prepared by chef Ho himself. The reason is the plate and utensils in the kitchen are not as complete as the Klang outlet. You need to have lots of gravy with this noodle for it to taste good. When I had it in 1 Utama, the plate is not big enough to put all the gravy in and the WOK also is smaller. This is recommended to have it in Klang’s outlet where you can taste the best out of Chef Ho’s skill in preparing vegetarian wonders.

Mock Dried Meats (Bak Kua) with steamed Man Tou – Rating 4/5

This dish is meant to be eaten the Peking Duck way.  Cut open the bun, put in a slice of meat and cucumber. Marvelous!

yishensu klang - 04

With such a selection of good food, I will definitely be back for more. All my friends who were meat lovers also astonish with the taste of the poon choi. They even made reservation for fathers day. So this dish is highly recommended! For now this only available upon booking in advance to dine in 1 Utama. Call up Yishensu and tell them where and when you want to eat the poon choi and it will be prepared for you. Do note that on the day you dine itself, you will need to wait about 1 hour before the poon choi is ready. Never go and chase them for faster serving. Taste will differs. So go for a little bit of appetizers.

lol, nice post. I stayed in Bukit Tinggi for years, and went to bbt-one a few times, saw this restaurant at second floor, but never dare to walk into it, because vegetarian gives me a very bad impressiong. But after reading ur post, i have second thought, :D. Gonna try it some day.

      Thanks.

Can’t blame you. That area is so new and practically no people at all when we went there during lunch time. That area now slowly growing though.

  8. The Vegetarian Poon Chooi looks like the one I ate in Hong Kong but with lots of meat.

Pretty cool post. I just came across your blog and wanted to say
that I have really liked reading your blog posts. In any case
I’ll be subscribing to your feed and I hope you post again soon!

  10. Christy says:

I can’t believe that the chef himself is a vegetarian…haha, shows that this is not purely vegetarian after all, yeah:p

Nevertheless, I am still very impressed by the colorful variety; and how they mimicked the actual stuffs; I am half a vegetarian too…haha, I just love vegetarian food:)
One thing though, I do find it unreasonable when they charge you at the same price as the actual ones…it’s just not right; maybe for the craftsmanship in emulating the actual taste and look, but still not justifiable for the ingredients itself….don’t you think so?

  11. J2Kfm says:

so this was the one you were raving bout!
gotta find the one in Kampar quick. before this slips my mind!

I saw the outlet at 1U last week and thought it was a real fine-dining restaurant. Does the price cost like fine-dining price too?
But the poon choi is really impressive. I’m into vegetarian food but can hardly find good outlets in Pg!!
