Kafe Aik Hwa - Ah Sai Economy Rice In Perak Road

October 23, 2008 by email2me · 9 Comments

Penang …… commonly know to people as the hawker foods heaven by tourist and outstation folks. But to us which came from the island we always run out of idea what to have for lunch or dinner. I guess we are too pampered with all these choices. So normally if I ran out of idea of what to eat for lunch/brunch (Breakfast + Lunch), I’ll go for economy rice.

One of the regular shop which I will visit would be an old  shop located at the busy Jalan Perak. This shop have been operating for the last 30 years (if not mistaken). The shop is constantly crowded and the foods are always hot.The shop which I mentioning about is Kafe Aik Hwa.

The ambiance are very old school as it haven’t change much since it is opened till to date. The tables and chairs were made of stainless steels and marble tables mix with some of it fully stainless steel.

Inside this kopitiam, there are only one stall which selling only economy rice. Ai Sai Economy Rice have been selling for a few generations.

Ah Sai Economy Rice 12.JPG

Ah Sai Economy Rice is very famous for its asam stingray curry which they cook daily and sold out at the same day without any left overs. In fact most of their foods don’t have any left overs. All the foods are constantly warm as they just cook a portion enough to sell at that period. When finish, immediately they cook it again at the back. You can opt to DIY to choose your own dish or they prepare for you. If they prepare for you, all you need to do is just point and it will be serve to your table.

At the bottom right, you can see the whole piece of pork trotter there. You can choose which part you want and they’ll chop it for you.

The rest of the dishes ……. I guess by looking at the pictures, you know what it is ….. Too many to list down …

My deep fried pork balls (BAK WAN). This is nice to be taken with the stingray curry. The pork ball can absorb the curry if you soak it in the gravy.

The bak kut teh is a mild type which everyone could adapt to the taste rather than Klang’s version which is more strong in herbal taste.

The fish were fresh and the ginger mix was excellent. A recommended place for dinner and supper.

Remark:

Tonkatsu (???, ????, or ????, pork cutlet), invented in the late 19th century, is a popular dish in Japan. It consists of a breaded, deep fried pork cutlet one to two centimeters thick and sliced into bite-sized pieces, generally served with shredded cabbage. Either a pork fillet (??, hire) or pork loin (???, r?su) cut may be used; the meat is usually salted, peppered and dipped in a mixture of flour, beaten egg and panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) before being deep fried.

When we sit down, we were given each person a wooded pastel and mortar. Inside the bowl there are roasted sesame seeds. We asked the waiter and he ask us grind it. So we grind it and then mix with the tonkatsu sauce. For the set menu, it comes with a free flow of cabbage and rice. We had 4 satisfied customer here for the whole dinner. We will definitely be back for the pork and cabbage.

Along the Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman, I have tried the top nasi kandar stalls which is Haji Ibramsha, Yaseen and this one. This is ranked the last out of all. There are nothing special out of their curries. It is just moderate and is crowded because of their strategic location.

Remark:

A must try for the chilly pan mee although they said this restaurant is copying the Kin Kin Pan Mee in KL, they taste pretty good. Don’t put too much chilly at first try or you will smoke your ass later on. I felt that this restaurant’s chili is more fragrant than Kin Kin’s. Every bowl served are pretty consistent on the taste and serving time is pretty fast compared to Kin Kin’s which need to wait at least 1/2 an hour.
