Sin Yin Nam Cafe [New Lane / Lorong Baru Food Street]

November 16, 2008 by email2me · 5 Comments

Penang ….. a heaven of hawkers food paradise. When you speak of hawker foods to tourist, they will tell you Gurney Drive straight away. This is due to a lots of publicity have been done to this spot by the foreigners what came before.

To me as a local, I will not go there during the holiday season or weekends. I will only go for their few specialties like Rojak, Tau Fu Fah, Toast Squid and Mua Chee. The rest are pretty repititive or highly over rated by the tourist. If my coleaques wanted to have a spot fully loaded with hawkers food, I’ll definitely bring them to Sin Yin Nam Cafe or more popular known as New Lane by the locals.

New Lane Food Street 34.JPG

There are more than 30 stalls located here which sell different type of hawker foods which come with a reasonable price. However lately due to more and more tourist patronize these stalls, the price is slightly higher compared to the last time. It is still affordable though.

New Lane Food Street 31.JPG
There are stalls which refuse the pay the rental in Sin Yin Nam cafe and operated across the road instead. However the environment here are not as hygiene compared to dining in the cafe. The foods here are equally good though.

FOODS SOLD HERE

Basically to locals, the most famous stall here is the PORK INTESTINE PORRIDGE.

New Lane Food Street 03.JPG
Look at those pork intestines hanging like an intestines show case. This stall is the most famous for their porridge.

New Lane Food Street 04.JPG
The brownish colors are deep fried and the white color ones are boiled together with the porridge

New Lane Food Street 05.JPG
The intestines were cut into small pieces together with char siew as the condinment for the porridge. Don’t just by the look for the fried intestines. It is very crunchy!

New Lane Food Street 06.JPG
White and smooth porridge. A bowl will never enough. Each bowl cost range from RM4 to RM5 depends you got add in extras. The rating for this porridge goes 5/5 for me.

New Lane Food Street 07.JPG

Next we move on to the next stall which is just right behind the pork intestines porridge would be the PORK RIBS HOKKIEN PRAWN MEE. This hokkien mee’s rating is 4/5.

New Lane Food Street 08.JPG

In front of this stall is the roast chicken wings. It comes with a rating of 4/5 from my past test.

New Lane Food Street 09.JPG
All the chicken wings and drumsticks are hand roasted directly on the charcoals.

New Lane Food Street 10.JPG

New Lane Food Street 11.JPG
All the chicken wings and drumsticks were roast 1/2 way done to shorten the preparation time when customer placing the orders.

Next we went to the Chee Cheong Fun stall. This stall have been selling here since the coffee shop started.

New Lane Food Street 13.JPG

New Lane Food Street 14.JPG
Cold Chee Cheong Fun. It needs to be heat up to taste good. Some people like it cold though.

New Lane Food Street 15.JPG
Basic Penang Chee Cheong Fun Dressings and Condiments. Sweet sauce, shrimp paste, chilis, pre cooked oils, fried shallots, light soya sauce and sesame seeds.

New Lane Food Street 17.JPG
My plate of Chee Cheong Fun with the roll in tact. Most people like it unrolled. The rating for this plate of Chee Cheong Fun would be 4/5. RM1.80 for 2 rolls

New Lane Food Street 16.JPG
My Fried ordered the crab meat char koey teow. It taste really good but a bit pricey lately. Rating of 4/5 for this. RM5 if not mistaken.

My old friend were craving for the popiah also. So I went and place an order for him and at the same time takings some shots.

New Lane Food Street 18.JPG

New Lane Food Street 19.JPG
Turnips … the main ingredient for popiah

New Lane Food Street 21.JPG
Fillings for popiah would be crushed bean curds, chilis, sweet sauce, spinach and cooked turnips

New Lane Food Street 23.JPG
The turnips need to be dried off a bit as it would be very messy and hard to wrap into the popiah skins of too much sauce in it

New Lane Food Street 24.JPG
Popiah wrapping in progress

New Lane Food Street 25.JPG

New Lane Food Street 26.JPG

New Lane Food Street 27.JPG
Then it is cut into mouth size and poured a bit of the gravy on top. This is truly Penang style of eating popiah. Not like other place which their popiah are very dry. Rating 3/5 for this popiah. 2 rolls come with a price tag of RM2.40

New Lane Food Street 32.JPG
Seafood Char Koay Kak …. this stalls Koay Kak Taste so so only and the price are a bit cut throat to me. It cost RM4.50 per plate and the taste rating is just 2/5 to my personal taste.

New Lane Food Street 33.JPG

New Lane Food Street 36.JPG
Pork Satay. Gosh …. both of us can’t eat anymore when we walk by this stall and it smells so good. We had it before and the taste would be 3/5

Comment/Remark:

A must visit for nasi kandar lovers. The dishes cooked here are pure mamak style and the curry mixer of this shop is a true proffesional. From rumours I heard, this fella is earning more than 10k per month just to mix curry and serve rice. Trust me he is real pro. Eventhough you can’t take spicy, you just inform him. He will know what to do. He speaks 4 languages english, tamil, hokkien and malay.

The beef, “ayam roast” and fish eggs is the signature dish of this shop. A lesson to eat nasi kandar. Never take your nasi kandar curry seperately. You have to ask the pro to mix everything under one plate.
