Bayan Baru Market Food Court, Chicken Lam Mee
October 31, 2008 by email2me · 3 Comments
Besides the Ban Chen Kuih located at stall no. 81, there are another stall which I pretty frequent with that is the Chicken Lam Mee at stall no 13. I like this Lam Mee so much is because of the way they prepare is so much different compared to the KL’s version which using thick yellow mee and starchy soup type.
This stall have been operated for more than 20 years also and nowadays the lady only open on Fri to Sun. It only available for breakfast. The reason why is that the lady don’t have enough man power to operate the stall which she need to cook, prepare and serve.

Our Penang version come with a clear chicken soup and also taken together with blanched bean sprouts, sliced omelette, sliced prawns, shredded chicken meats, pork lards, garlic crisp and a sprinkle of fresh spring onions. Not to forget the fantastic sambal belacan which we usually mix into our soup when we eat.

Bayan Baru Market Food Court Ban Chen Kuih
October 30, 2008 by email2me · 9 Comments
“Ban Chen Kuih“, Ban Chang Kuih, apom balik, apam balik, apam …… all sorts of name are used to represent a piece of chinese pan cake. The pancake basically have 2 types. One is a thin and crunchy type and another one is the thicker version. Different people like different version for their chinese pan cakes.
I like mine thin and with plenty of crunched peanuts, extra sweet corns and extra margerine. I usually visit the stall 81 in Bayan Baru Wet Market in Penang. In KL, it is pretty hard to find the same taste of what I had back in my lovely hometown.
I have been patronizing this stall for more than 20 years and the quality still maintain.
He is using charcoal stove to bake all the pan cakes. Imagine the skill you need to handle all 8 pans when the business are peak. His ingredients are basically the most basic for baking pancakes which is flour, eggs, sugar, crunched peanuts, creammy type sweet corns and also margarine.
By looking at the pictures also enough to kill, look at that crispy pan cakes with the corn !!!! Arghh …. It makes me really want to bite on it now.
The uncle told me a secret of making the pan cake to be able to stay crunchy for a longer time. When it is taken out from the pan, you have to let it cool down before packing it. If not, it will get soggy and become soft.
The price per piece for this pan cake still very cheap (RM0.60) in Penang compared to KL which is RM1 per piece on the basic peanuts only. Checkout more detail pricing at the picture below.

Jalan Perak Fish Ball Asam Laksa at Restaurant Khean Hooi
October 29, 2008 by email2me · 6 Comments
There are a long history back where asam laksa is considered a high tea snack. They use to be serving it in a small bowl rather than the current version which serve in a standard size bowl. For tourist, your trip to Penang won’t be complete if you didn’t taste the ASAM LAKSA and CHAR KOEY TEOW.
For tourist, when you talk about asam laksa, the first that would come into your mind would be the Kek Lok Si/Air Itam Bus Station Asam Laksa. I already patron this stall since I was at the very young age cause my house just a 10 minutes walk away. But now I find that their soup are getting more diluted and didn’t taste as good as last time.
I currently prefer the one in Jelutong which recommended by my friend. It is operated by husband and wife at a kopitiam called Khean Hooi Restaurant.
The coffee shop have nothing special and doesn’t even have a big crowd. But don’t be fool with the crowd. The hidden gems are shown as you walk approach a stall there.
Standard ingredients for asam laksa.
This is what make this stall so famous for. Fish balls ! It is huge and bigger than our standard dim sum fishballs.
You get a whole piece of fish for every bowl you order. You can opt for additional fish with extra charges. You can look at the soup which is pretty clear. This is due to the way they cook the soup which that they don’t let the fish to overcook till smashed and blend into the soup. Do rest assure that the taste still as good!
This bowl is mine !!!! Look at those freshly cut chili padi …….
