Kafe Aik Hwa - Ah Sai Economy Rice In Perak Road

October 23, 2008 by email2me · 9 Comments

Penang …… commonly know to people as the hawker foods heaven by tourist and outstation folks. But to us which came from the island we always run out of idea what to have for lunch or dinner. I guess we are too pampered with all these choices. So normally if I ran out of idea of what to eat for lunch/brunch (Breakfast + Lunch), I’ll go for economy rice.

One of the regular shop which I will visit would be an old  shop located at the busy Jalan Perak. This shop have been operating for the last 30 years (if not mistaken). The shop is constantly crowded and the foods are always hot.The shop which I mentioning about is Kafe Aik Hwa.

The ambiance are very old school as it haven’t change much since it is opened till to date. The tables and chairs were made of stainless steels and marble tables mix with some of it fully stainless steel.

Inside this kopitiam, there are only one stall which selling only economy rice. Ai Sai Economy Rice have been selling for a few generations.

Ah Sai Economy Rice is very famous for its asam stingray curry which they cook daily and sold out at the same day without any left overs. In fact most of their foods don’t have any left overs. All the foods are constantly warm as they just cook a portion enough to sell at that period. When finish, immediately they cook it again at the back. You can opt to DIY to choose your own dish or they prepare for you. If they prepare for you, all you need to do is just point and it will be serve to your table.

My deep fried pork balls (BAK WAN). This is nice to be taken with the stingray curry. The pork ball can absorb the curry if you soak it in the gravy.

Chinese Pork Roll …. Loh Bak… full with spice, onions and tight wrapping of pork strips under the bean curd skins.

Remark:
Compared to Ampang Homeland Yong Tau Fu which I have done review earlier, this restaurant does not live up to my expectation as per describe by locals which said this restaurant is where Yong Tau Fu is born. The environment is very hot and your clothes will have fried yong tau fu smell after having your lunch there.

Choices wise, you can’t pick what you want for first order. All you need to do is to tell them how many person’s portion you want and order extra per items when it is not enough. This is fine for me. So we end up ordered for 5 persons portion which serve pretty quick even the whole restaurant is full house.

Taste wise, we don’t find it good as the soup are pretty salty. Overall it is just so so.
