Hussain Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus, Jelutong Market Penang
October 28, 2008 by email2me · 4 Comments
Mee goreng ….. a direct translation to english would be fried mee. On the basic idea we would just think that throw the mee into the frying pan and fried it. It is not as simple as that. In Penang, “Mee Goreng” is rather popular among locals. It is due to the way of those Indian Muslims fry it in a different way which involve combination of a few sauces and ingredients. In KL, it has a different name which called Mee Goreng Mamak. But the taste is totally out!. It never taste the same as most of them use gas to fry it.
The shop which I visit the most is Hussain Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus. Hussain have been operating the stalls for more than 20 years. He can speak a very fluent hokkien!
This stall is located right after the turn to the right into Jelutong Wet Market.
When you reaching , you can see a guy there frying non stop and many customers patiently standing a side waiting for their mee.
All the mee were charcoal fried ! The taste you fried by using gas taste not as good.
Imagine the red hot frying pan so so hot and yet Hussain use his hand to hold the frying pan. You can totally ignore the the hygienic part of this food. But who cares when it come to a good plate of mee goreng.
During the mee is fried, Hussain will put in a precooked chili, sotong soup stock, prawn fritters, fried bean curds, potatoes, squid, soya sauce and eggs.I like my mee to be super red !!! means more chili ……
The mee are ready and is served with spinach as the garnishing and a cut of lime. Make sure you squeeze the lime into the mee before eat. It brings out a balance taste of sour, spicy, salty and sweet. Imagine so many types of taste in a single plate.

Remark:
All the food here are authentic Penang taste. For example the Lam Mee which is very different from what we have in KL. KL type is a bit starchy and Penang one is in clear soup. The real Penang Lam Mee is cooked in clear prawn soup and eat together with sambal belacan.
* Mee picture taken from Masak-Masak due to I tar pau it back to my office to eat rather than sitting there to try it.
