Sandakan Food – Beef Noodle at Kedai Kopi Santa

When you are on tour at Sandakan, Sabah you don’t have much choice after you left the main town on foods. On the way from Sepilok towards Kinabatangan, we don’t see much stop over or eateries along the journey.

This coffee shop is located along the way towards the Kinabatangan journey. Next to this kopitiam, is a  convenient store for traveller stop over.

Very very spacious kopitiam which owned by a Chinese and handled by Muslim workers.

Damn good sambals! Fiery hot and taste like local made tobasco sauce. Add a squeeze of lime and oh la la ….. lips smacking good!

Battered Fried Chicken

The Infamous Beef Noodle in clear soup with koey teow. The koey teow are close to Southern Peninsular Malaysia Koey Teow Kia which slightly thicker.

Just look at that slice of beef. Super tender and melt in your mouth. Perfect lean fat proportions.

The dry version topped with fish and prawns. This plate is for those Chinese who don’t take beef due to religion issue.

Kedai Kopi Santa is located at JALAN SEGALIUD.

Four Points By Sheraton Sandakan Sabah

Early this month I had a short break in Sandakan, Sabah. I can say this is the furthest east point of the country that I visit for the very first time. Sandakan town are pretty laid back in terms of lifestyle. All the people take life pretty easy and relax. Perfect for a weekend get away and back to the nature as it is surrounded by the Sulu sea and luscious nature.

I am very fortunate to be invited to stay at Sandakan’s newest and most luxurious hotel in town the Four Points by Sheraton.

Situated on Sandakan’s prominent waterfront overlooking the Sulu Sea, Four Points by Sheraton Sandakan offers a comfortable, relaxed stay for value-oriented business and leisure travellers  Part of the award-winning integrated commercial development – Sandakan Harbour Square, a joint venture between ICSD Ventures Sdn Bhd and the Sandakan Municipal Council, the hotel is located amidst the city’s new Central Business District and with many points of interest close to its doorstep, including the Central Market and Harbour Mall Sandakan shopping center.

One of the sun dried seafoods seller inside the Central market.

Fresh sea weed.

As the second largest city in Sabah, Sandakan is fast gaining popularity as an eco-tourism venue in South East Asia. Unique attractions include the Sandakan Heritage Trail, Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, Turtle Islands Park, Labuk Bay Proboscis Monkey Sanctuary, Kinabatangan River, and Gomantong Caves.

Upon arriving at the hotel, we were directed to level 1 where the check in lobby is located. We were seated and served a welcome drink by the hotel.

On certain day, there are welcome dance as well where the traditional dance from the locals.

Each of the hotel’s 300 stylish contemporary guest rooms is filled with thoughtful touches that contribute to an unencumbered, comfortable stay. Just by standing at the lift lobby already mesmerise you with its harbour view where all the fishing boats docked right beside the central market.

Hotel guests also enjoy use of a fully equipped gym and outdoor pool on the 13th floor, with expansive views of the bustling harbor and city.

View from the pool corner where there’s a place where you can walk out a bit from the building and take a panoramic view of the place. Not for the faint hearted though.

The harbour dock and also the fish market where all fisherman boats off load their daily catchings.

The place are best enjoyed by walking along the coast line or jog early in the morning. The sun rise slightly more early compared to west Malaysia. At 6am, the sun is already rise and by 7pm the sunsets.

As most of you know, I am a business traveller that rely a lot on business center to meet up clients and friends. Before I touch down, I already got all my fellow photographers and friends booked my time to see me for various reasons. On the night I was there, I have some photography talk with my fellow photographers at the hotel’s business center. The place were absolutely perfect for play hard and work hard. The business center are only accessible by in house guest with their room key card. So the whole night when I was there with my friends, several other guest came in to print their flight boarding pass.

After the lunch, we were touring around the hotels on all the rooms and checking out all the facilities. Then we were invited to participate in their team building program where we get to cook in group.

My Pandan team member Kiran and Evelyn.

I was under team Pandan to cook kuih ketayap challenge. In Sandakan, they call it kuih lenggang where normally when people baking the wrapping skins tends to shake their butt.

This is how kuih ketayap / lenggang looks like. A fluffy pandan wrap batter with shredded pre cooked with brown sugar coconut.

Yours truly cooking …..

How do I look? look pro enough? hahaha …… joking ….. this is an easy task for most of the people who knows how to cook.

Each of us are assigned a task in order to participate the event.

Instead of beach events or running here and there, cooking can bring people together to build a better team work. You need to plan and execute the plans in order to win the competition. However my team do not win but I enjoy the process.

Tada ….. here’s the finish product.

Holiday Inn Hotel Melaka For Weekend Retreat And Spa

Melaka as one of the historic city in Malaysia has been a major spot for Singaporean and KL people to hang out for a short get away. Most of the hotels were boutique type which reside in the middle of Jonker street.  But look, when you want to have a weekend get away with the family first thing you must get a good place to rest. Then only come to food. I would like to recommend you guys to checkout Holiday Inn Melaka. The hotel is located by the sea hence most of the rooms are facing the ocean and swimming pool (80% of the rooms).

Upon stepping into the rooms, you will feel very homey and comfortable. The paint color in the room does make a difference. Compared to a white wall which is kinda dull and normal, the green wall and pair with the bed liner made the room more classy. FYI, Holiday Inn are under the same management group of Intercontinental Hotels. So the way they decorate the room are pretty much the same that have a family feel yet business class. There are 2 types of bath room which some came with bath tub and another one with rain shower type which I love so much. Bath tub is for people who love to soak. For me I want fast, big splash and strong water pressure shower which my room came with it. Not many hotels has this but for the hotel to implement this, I give my thumbs up.

My room view facing the infinity pool and the Straits Of Malacca.

Every room are provided with a LAN cable with WIFI coverage at the same time are the crucial features for business traveller like me. There are 2 power socket on the working table wall which is the ideal number for current trend. The traditional 1 socket per room for charging are not sufficient where 1 we use for laptop and 1 for phone. There’s even a chair that let you relax and face the ocean to calm your mind after a hectic drive in the highway.

The look and feel of the grand entrance of the hotel, swimming pool view, function halls and a small snack counter right next to the main lobby for guest to chill out. Some pastries are available to go along with your drinks. We just walk in and were greeted by the staff who are on duty that open the door for us and lead us to resting place before assisting us to check in. While checking in, we were served with a complimentary welcome drink. A glass of cold green tea on a scorching hot day are just nice consideration of the hotel. I am saying this not because I get special treatment or what. They don’t even know I am a blogger. Everyone are treated the same. Kudos to the team here who are customer centric. Many of the guest here were from Singapore and KL that fill up the hotel every weekend. Occupancy at this hotel always maintain at 90% during weekends so I would advise to book early to secure your room.

After check in, we take a walk to check out what facility do the hotel have. We stumble upon a nice spa which known as Tea Tree Spa on the level 3 before the swimming pool.

From outside, it may look normal spa. You should go in and there are private area which in chalet style that allows you to pamper yourself with their signature full body massage. The price are pretty reasonable and a range of package awaits you by their pro masseurs.

The sign ask you to keep quite means there are a massage session going on. If you don’t want to go for the full body set, you can opt for foot massage or checkout the jacuzzi and sauna. All the facilities in the spa are well taken care. Clean and nice.

Right opposite the spa, the Executive Club greets you with a range of free flow alcohol drinks (Time Limited) and all day long food bar.

You are entitle to this if you are a member of the Priority Club Rewards and those who stay at their premium executive level or suites. The place are good to have a short break before or after your trip to nearby heritage sites.

Cozy seatings with complimentary computer with high speed internet usage for priority club members. You are entitled to have breakfast here too where you are placed in a more special service compared to the coffee house which is more crowded. Here is less crowded and more personalised service by the waiter and waitress. Food range are more premium and you dine in a more quiet environment. You can choose to sit at the couch or dining table style arrangement when you are in the executive club.

Enough of checking out the hotel? You can choose to dine in the hotel which they offer a pretty good mid range Italian Dining or go for food hunt.

Checkout my Melaka Good Food List to start your journey. But the traffic along the Jonker are hectic during peak season.

Getting Out Of My Hectic Schedule To Hong Kong Disneyland

Recently I got many business projects, food reviews, commercial and wedding photography assignments on hand. I have been working non stop round the clock and lost track of holidays. Maybe out of my hardwork in my blogging, I am lucky enough to be picked by Hong Kong Disneyland to have a tour at their theme park.

I have heard a lot about the place but never been there before.  The theme park has the all time renowned friend like Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pluto, Chip and Dale.

If you don’t know who they are, most probably you never watch TV before. I practically grew up with them. Back in the days Mickey Mouse show is aired black and white during my childhood times. Now I get to meet them!

A side of the standard mascots, there are different themes on a different season like the upcoming ones is Toy Story Land. You can see the latest updates at their website on what’s the upcoming attraction from the theme park.

So for this trip I will be updating there live on my Facebook and twitter!

Stay tune!

Desaru Fruit Farm Tour and River Cruise Firefly Sight Seing

From my previous post, which I write about experiencing the traditional life as a villagers. Nearby to the resort, there are plenty of interesting activities can be done aside from playing within the resort entertainment provided. There are a fruit farm and river nearby where your can bring your family there. A lot of the young kids nowadays never see how’s the actual food looks like before it is cooked.

Photos of the fruit farm, dragon fruit which still attach to the tree and cat whiskers plant which famous for slimming tea.

Traditional Malay Home Stay and Dining Experience At Kampung Pasir Mas, Desaru

You see lately the weather like getting nuts. Some people who travel down to Johor Desaru Beach which leave them kinda disappointed when the weather is dangerous to play at beach. Though no rain, the wind are kinda dangerous.

How about for a change, go and do a village stay and live like one for once in your life. I did that before when I was a kid with my grandparents. We woke up wee early in the morning around 4am to go rubber tapping. With the creative mindset and caring for the heritage preservation, Pulai Desaru Beach Resort can arrange for you.

Pulai Desaru Beach Resort & Spa Featuring Eco Tour Back To Nature Experience

On my last introduction for my Johor escapade, we started off the journey from KL 7.30am. On a 2 cars convoy, we reach Senai airport for a break around 11am. After the break, we head to Desaru via the new E22 Senai – Desaru Expressway which shorten our trip which previously take longer hours. In the olden days, we need to go all the way down to Johor Bahru and from there drive another 1 hour plus just to reach Desaru.

E22 has been fully completed and opened to public starting from 10 June 2011. The final stretch from Cahaya Baru to Desaru is approximately 27 km in length which includes the Single Plane Cable-Stayed Bridge across Sg Johor that ends at the Penawar Interchange.

With the linkage to Desaru, Desaru will be truly rejuvenated and is expected to increase the number of visitors, both locals and foreigners to Desaru. With the completion of the highway, travelling distance from Ulu Tiram to Penawar is reduced by 16 km while travelling time reduced by 1 hour. For more details on the Expressway Map.

We touch down at the Hotel and were greeted by the staffs who were expecting our arrival.

Wall landscaping with water running at the gate near the guard house

Without wasting much time, we proceed to the check in counter. Upon stepping in to the main lobby, we already can feel the sea breeze and fresh air from the surrounding lush greenery. The tall and high ceiling is a design concept where there are no air condition needed. Eventhough it was a bright sunny day, the air in the premiss is so cool. Eco Tour By Pulai Group At Johor Bahru On Malaysia Day 2011

How many of you went for a short break out from the busy city on last Malaysia Day? Being a Penangite, I am not able to go home during holiday season. The traffic jam, the early closure of my favorite hawker foods (Back in Penang and no food???). Fine screw that plan.

People from south going north. How about I go the other way round. I visit south instead. So I planned a trip down with a bunch of fellow food bloggers starting off from Desaru and ended in Johor Bahru. Below is the whole trips overview which later I will go in detail on each of the activity. There will be no tall buildings or shopping spree in this post. It is all about back to the traditional get away and also green nature scenes.

Day 1

Desaru Beach …. The famous getaway beaches for Singaporeans over the weekend

Check in to the great Pulai Desaru Beach Resort & Spa which most of the rooms having a nice scene.
