Nasi Lemak ….. one of the favorite food in Malaysia for breakfast. I came across a few much talk about best nasi lemak around KL and PJ area. Notable nasi lemak seller like Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa at Kampung Baru and Village Park at Damansara Uptown were slightly over rated. I grow up with Nasi lemak since I was having a neighbour who is a nasi lemak seller. Everyday just go next door and tar pau. I miss those days.

Nasi lemak doesn’t need to be fancy and just need to have the basic condiments like hard boil egg, deep fried crunchy anchovies, fresh cut cucumber and sambal. That’s it. Over the year more and more dish were added to the nasi lemak like beef, cockles, squids and fried eggs. Too many things add on will make it like a full main course. Nasi lemak is meant to be light weight to start your day.

My favorite Nasi Lemak stall is located in front of HSBC Bank along Jalan Ipoh. This stall has 3 branches but I will tell you 2 which is more easy to find.

Recently after the closure of Kafe 888, the shop lot has been kept empty for few months until Nasi Lemak Antarabangsa Kampung Baru took over. The shop have been re-renovated and just open for business last week. I am a big fan of nasi lemak but I never step my foot at their main outlet which located at Kg Baru KL. Everytime I get turn off by the long que.

I am not sure the history of this nasi lemak but their name is really well known. When people said wanna go for nasi lemak in KL, automatically Kg Baru KL nasi lemak will come in mind. When I arrive there, the restaurant is 50% occupied.

The huge picture displaying people que for nasi lemak at the main branch

Nice and comfortable environment

I met Kampungboy and City Gal after seated for a while and we ate together. Seriously the service here are terrible. We need to wait for everything at least 20 mins for them to take order, deliver and return my change after paying the bill. In their main branch, everything was self service. Here they will pass you a menu and take down your order. Then they input the order to the computer nearby so that the kitchen can process the order. It take around 15 minutes for them to deliver.

We sit at the back area as the front part were mostly big tables cater for 4 or more pax

A standard nasi lemak plate come with coconut milk rice, anchovies with peanuts, 1/2 hard boiled egg and cucumber RM2.95

Penang is a very humid place as it is surrounded by the ocean. In the afternoon, when the sun is on top of our head, you can feel the heat is much hotter than any other place in the peninsula Malaysia. To cool myself down, usually I will go and dig for Lorong Aboo Sitee’s Fresh Pandan Anba Coconut drink. That was the past …. Now I found something which is better and much tastier.

PENANG COCONUT JELLY!

My post is still showing Manjung Jelly coz when I first visit them with CK (Thanks for the treat and this nice recommendation), it is still under the old brand name. JOEL or he preferred to be known as JOE is the new person incharge of the whole company. He then rebrand this Manjung Jelly to Penang Coconut Jelly.

The coconut jelly is made from 100% fresh pandan coconut which you can see in actual size is a bit smaller than normal coconut. But when you drink the water inside, there are pandan taste in it. This is perfect to turned into coconut jelly as it acts as a natural flavoring for the jelly.

The coconut are machine cut and shaved. Then they manually do the little opening on top to add in some secret ingredients (trade secret. sorry cannot disclose) which solidify the coconut juice into jelly. Don’t worry the secret ingredients are HALAL and approved by the health ministry standards.

Then it is keep in fridge maintaining -2 degrees

Fresh cold pandan coconut …. Yummy!

See how soft is the jelly ….. It is almost close to jello softness but slightly a bit harder

Last Saturday, I was in Berjaya Time Square for checking out the anime fest organized by Maxis Hot Link. Then before attending the event, I go and have my brunch in Papa John Pizza. The I stumbled on the huge logo which is very familiar to me. I was like OH MY GOD! Krispy Kreme is here! It is just next door to Papa John’s Pizza in Berjaya Time Square. Ground floor. Then I go near it and checkout when it is going to open. The renovation notice there said it will be completed by April 16, 2009. I guess this was the opening date? Hope it is. So there goes another big storm of doughnuts people go que up like in J.CO and Big Apple Donuts.

Early of the year, I was driving around The Strand Damansara which is a newly developed commercial area to checkout any new restaurants coming. Then I found the only restaurant that opens which facing the main road was BIG BROTHER. I was wondering what do the name means and tell my self give people a chance eventhough the restaurant does not have any customer. To me as a foodie and also a Penangites, we had a bad habit. We never step into a place that doesn’t have crowd. Don’t you agree more? I was their 13th customer after they opened for the second day when I pay them a visit.

This time, it really proves me wrong! Never judge a book by its cover. This restaurant serves you a hell good of western foods. It makes you crave for more after you try them.

THE LOCATION AND RESTAURANT SETUP

You may not able to notice the shop at it is built slightly higher. You will first notice ONKING when you come straight from the Sri Selangor Golf Club. They are just a stone throw away. But with Adi’s (The Boss) idea, he made a very bright sign board at night. It glows very bright and very attractive and easy to spot. If you still can’t find it, as around where is the new Alliance Bank. They are a few doors away.
