After we had our Pork Satay at Xiang Ji’s, we head to the Portuguese Settlement to chill out and relax ourself after a long day drive. The water front near the seafood food court area is very similar to the one back in Penang Gurney Drive, just shorter.

Old Jetty Pillars

The stall is located at the far left of the food court and only open from 5.30pm onwards.

On the left basket, it is the raw mango and the one on the right is ripe type. This 2 are mix together in a juicer to create a perfect cup of fresh mango juice.

Those mangoes go straight into the juicer and then served on the rock (ice cubes). Then a dried sour plum is added for little hints of salty flavor just like our lime and plum juice. Just like that. No sugar added.

I had 3 cups and still contemplated to go for the 4th. Just got worry can’t drive back to KL on that night. The mango juice is so tasty till I forgot to shoot my glass.

You heard of wine tasting, hard liquor tasting, food tasting …… Have you ever heard of beer tasting? This is something which I did with a fellow blogger Johnson to try out some craft beers. A little bit of intro from Wikipedia on what is Micro Brewed / Craft beers.

Craft Beer is an American term which is also common in Canada and New Zealand and generally refers to beer that is brewed using traditional methods, without adjuncts such as rice or corn, and with an eye (or a tongue) to what’s distinctive and flavorful rather than mass appeal. Whereas the term microbrewery is a term for a small scale brewery that produces a small volume of beer, craft brewery describes an approach to brewing, which in principle may be carried out on any scale. Most microbreweries are also craft breweries; however, “craft” beer can certainly also be a product of a large brewery, and there are many such products coming to market as a result of increased consumer interest in traditional beer.

Like any other beers, it is produced by the brewing and fermentation of starches, mainly derived from cereal grains—most commonly malted barley, although wheat, maize (corn), and rice are widely used. Most beer is flavoured with hops, which add bitterness and act as a natural preservative, though other flavourings such as herbs or fruit may occasionally be included.

I think in Malaysia, Craft Brews Kota Damansara is the only brew house and restaurant that serves authentic craft beers.

The bar is designed with bronze pipes which resembles the actual micro brewery. Too bad in Malaysia, brewing beers on the spot is prohibited as it requires license to do it.

Tequila POP! Many of you will have the same thinking like me. Whenever tequila pop come into mind, we sure get the 7 shot glasses armed with salt and lime. 1… 2… 3… 4…. 5… 6…. 7 ….. Then either you pass out or you forgot what is your name. hahahaha ….

The impression totally changed the way I look at tequila which usually is a drink to get drunk fast! Like any other liquor, tequila also come with different quality. I am fortunate enough to be able to attend for tequila and mezcale tasting at Bentley’s Pub in Nikko Hotel KL.

Before the event got started, we were advised to take some foods before we go into tequila and mezcal tasting. It is not a good idea to drink hard liquor with an empty stomach.

Some of the miniature creation of Chef Daniel Ovadia. It taste the same compared to the actual fine dine version.

Last week when I visit my fellow photographer trainer at First Photography in Penang, they are kind enough to treat me a bottle of special sarsi drink. At first I thought they are holding a bottle of tamarind juice syrup which quite common to store in a small bottle.

It carries a chicken brand and it is 100% made in Malaysia, Kota Bahru Kelantan to be exact. Each bottle cost RM0.75 compared to F&N Sarsi which cost more than this. The bottle slightly smaller 285ml vs normal can of Sarsi which contain 325ml.

Taste wise, it is not that sweet. The sarsi taste still pretty strong but not as much gas as F&N’s. According to Kah Lee, the chef from Kafe Kofi King which house next to the First Photography, it can cure minor back pain. I gawk down a bottle of it and felt so refreshing especially the during the dry spell which hits the nation since last week during the CNY.

This can only be purchase in Kota Bahru, Kelantan like Pat Poh Peng only available in Penang island. It is widely available around mini marts or grocery stores. You can try your luck at local supermarket/hypermarket too to get this drink.

Last trip back to Penang was pretty a fruitful trip for food hunting. I was craving for old school gourmet coffee. Hokkien lang call it KOPI O! In KL all the mamak coffee are very diluted and more milk taste than the coffee. No matter how bad Penang’s kopi O, it still pawns the KL ones.

See how much coffee powder people put and those coffee drips from the filter? Penang folks said if the coffee drip doesn’t stick on the cup/glass it is consider diluted. Must TEOW AU (stick on the cup). I go and pick up the coffee filter and i think that easily come close to 500 grams in weight.

I was having a chit chat with Uncle Liew from Hong Yap Trading where Big Boys Oven held their class. Truly a Penang person I really respect him. Both of us can really talk when coming to food. I ask him about those famous kopitiam (coffeeshop) my grandfather’s time. They are so good where they roast their coffee beans at the back and in front where you can order a cup of fresh brewed kopi O. But most of them were closed due to the booming modernize cafe like Old Town White Coffee and mamak stalls.

Uncle reminds me of a place where I intended to visit in my hit list. This place is very run down and located in a pre war building.

Located a stone throw away from the Campbell Street and Penang Road T Junction, the kopitiam is called Kong Thai Lai Coffeeshop. Uncle Liew told me after all those kopitiam closed, only left this shop serve the best Kopi O and also there are a history behind this kopitiam.

Myself, Sidney and CK Lam pay them a visit for a sip of the coffee. They are about to close shop when we reach there around 3.45pm. There are no nice deco, no music and just plain furnitures in the shop. From the picture above you may notice why all the wooden tables and all of sudden a round table in the center. This is of the collectible which this owner refuse to sell to the late Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew (The Founder of Honda Malaysia).

Late Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew’s Regular Seat and Table according to the kopitiam owner

Tan Sri Loh Boon Siew was a regular here and his favorite table were the first table when you enter the shop. He has his personalized own cup there from the story told by Uncle Liew but we didn’t request for it when we were there since people about to close shop.

Penang is a very humid place as it is surrounded by the ocean. In the afternoon, when the sun is on top of our head, you can feel the heat is much hotter than any other place in the peninsula Malaysia. To cool myself down, usually I will go and dig for Lorong Aboo Sitee’s Fresh Pandan Anba Coconut drink. That was the past …. Now I found something which is better and much tastier.

PENANG COCONUT JELLY!

My post is still showing Manjung Jelly coz when I first visit them with CK (Thanks for the treat and this nice recommendation), it is still under the old brand name. JOEL or he preferred to be known as JOE is the new person incharge of the whole company. He then rebrand this Manjung Jelly to Penang Coconut Jelly.

The coconut jelly is made from 100% fresh pandan coconut which you can see in actual size is a bit smaller than normal coconut. But when you drink the water inside, there are pandan taste in it. This is perfect to turned into coconut jelly as it acts as a natural flavoring for the jelly.

The coconut are machine cut and shaved. Then they manually do the little opening on top to add in some secret ingredients (trade secret. sorry cannot disclose) which solidify the coconut juice into jelly. Don’t worry the secret ingredients are HALAL and approved by the health ministry standards.

Then it is keep in fridge maintaining -2 degrees

Fresh cold pandan coconut …. Yummy!

This year in 2009, I had the best Chinese New Year celebration ever with plenty of foods, sessions, events and I broke my personal record of having the most “LOU SANG” sessions in my entire life. I had 14 times to date. Every sessions bring a special memorable moments especially with other blogger and foodies.

Enough of Chinese New Year stuffs and this coming Saturday is the Valentines day turn. The day for all the couples around the world to go play candle light dinner.

This is my sets of Momiji Valentine Dolls which I bought after saw Masak-Masak’s post on this. All these dolls were limited edition collection items which is hand painted by Kong Soo who was an art college graduate from Malaysia in UK. I’ll show you all the rest of my dolls later …… Back to food …..

The day before I went to Kechara Oasis for a new restaurant launching, I was invited by Joshua for a session at Cova located at The Gardens Mid Valley Mega Mall.

I arrive there around 8pm and saw Sidney with CS who host us at Bondi Beach. Not long after that, a group of people came and most of them were the one who attended the Bondi Beach session.

The restaurant is designed for dining and chill out at the same time. They serve food from Asian to western foods and also having a fully equipped bar for booze after eat. The bartender is skillful enough to make you any drinks which you normally get from pub.

This place also came with free WIFI* service and good for business discussions as the environment are pretty quite. *Get the WEP key from the waiter

We were served with cocktail selections and hot drinks from their menu as a start.
