Bayan Baru Market Food Court, Chicken Lam Mee
October 31, 2008 by email2me · 3 Comments
Besides the Ban Chen Kuih located at stall no. 81, there are another stall which I pretty frequent with that is the Chicken Lam Mee at stall no 13. I like this Lam Mee so much is because of the way they prepare is so much different compared to the KL’s version which using thick yellow mee and starchy soup type.
This stall have been operated for more than 20 years also and nowadays the lady only open on Fri to Sun. It only available for breakfast. The reason why is that the lady don’t have enough man power to operate the stall which she need to cook, prepare and serve.

Our Penang version come with a clear chicken soup and also taken together with blanched bean sprouts, sliced omelette, sliced prawns, shredded chicken meats, pork lards, garlic crisp and a sprinkle of fresh spring onions. Not to forget the fantastic sambal belacan which we usually mix into our soup when we eat.

Bayan Baru Market Food Court Ban Chen Kuih
October 30, 2008 by email2me · 9 Comments
“Ban Chen Kuih“, Ban Chang Kuih, apom balik, apam balik, apam …… all sorts of name are used to represent a piece of chinese pan cake. The pancake basically have 2 types. One is a thin and crunchy type and another one is the thicker version. Different people like different version for their chinese pan cakes.
I like mine thin and with plenty of crunched peanuts, extra sweet corns and extra margerine. I usually visit the stall 81 in Bayan Baru Wet Market in Penang. In KL, it is pretty hard to find the same taste of what I had back in my lovely hometown.
I have been patronizing this stall for more than 20 years and the quality still maintain.
He is using charcoal stove to bake all the pan cakes. Imagine the skill you need to handle all 8 pans when the business are peak. His ingredients are basically the most basic for baking pancakes which is flour, eggs, sugar, crunched peanuts, creammy type sweet corns and also margarine.
By looking at the pictures also enough to kill, look at that crispy pan cakes with the corn !!!! Arghh …. It makes me really want to bite on it now.
The uncle told me a secret of making the pan cake to be able to stay crunchy for a longer time. When it is taken out from the pan, you have to let it cool down before packing it. If not, it will get soggy and become soft.
The price per piece for this pan cake still very cheap (RM0.60) in Penang compared to KL which is RM1 per piece on the basic peanuts only. Checkout more detail pricing at the picture below.

Jalan Perak Fish Ball Asam Laksa at Restaurant Khean Hooi
October 29, 2008 by email2me · 6 Comments
There are a long history back where asam laksa is considered a high tea snack. They use to be serving it in a small bowl rather than the current version which serve in a standard size bowl. For tourist, your trip to Penang won’t be complete if you didn’t taste the ASAM LAKSA and CHAR KOEY TEOW.
For tourist, when you talk about asam laksa, the first that would come into your mind would be the Kek Lok Si/Air Itam Bus Station Asam Laksa. I already patron this stall since I was at the very young age cause my house just a 10 minutes walk away. But now I find that their soup are getting more diluted and didn’t taste as good as last time.
I currently prefer the one in Jelutong which recommended by my friend. It is operated by husband and wife at a kopitiam called Khean Hooi Restaurant.
The coffee shop have nothing special and doesn’t even have a big crowd. But don’t be fool with the crowd. The hidden gems are shown as you walk approach a stall there.
Standard ingredients for asam laksa.
This is what make this stall so famous for. Fish balls ! It is huge and bigger than our standard dim sum fishballs.
You get a whole piece of fish for every bowl you order. You can opt for additional fish with extra charges. You can look at the soup which is pretty clear. This is due to the way they cook the soup which that they don’t let the fish to overcook till smashed and blend into the soup. Do rest assure that the taste still as good!
This bowl is mine !!!! Look at those freshly cut chili padi …….

Hussain Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus, Jelutong Market Penang
October 28, 2008 by email2me · 4 Comments
Mee goreng ….. a direct translation to english would be fried mee. On the basic idea we would just think that throw the mee into the frying pan and fried it. It is not as simple as that. In Penang, “Mee Goreng” is rather popular among locals. It is due to the way of those Indian Muslims fry it in a different way which involve combination of a few sauces and ingredients. In KL, it has a different name which called Mee Goreng Mamak. But the taste is totally out!. It never taste the same as most of them use gas to fry it.
The shop which I visit the most is Hussain Mee Goreng and Mee Rebus. Hussain have been operating the stalls for more than 20 years. He can speak a very fluent hokkien!
This stall is located right after the turn to the right into Jelutong Wet Market.
When you reaching , you can see a guy there frying non stop and many customers patiently standing a side waiting for their mee.
All the mee were charcoal fried ! The taste you fried by using gas taste not as good.
Imagine the red hot frying pan so so hot and yet Hussain use his hand to hold the frying pan. You can totally ignore the the hygienic part of this food. But who cares when it come to a good plate of mee goreng.
During the mee is fried, Hussain will put in a precooked chili, sotong soup stock, prawn fritters, fried bean curds, potatoes, squid, soya sauce and eggs.I like my mee to be super red !!! means more chili ……
The mee are ready and is served with spinach as the garnishing and a cut of lime. Make sure you squeeze the lime into the mee before eat. It brings out a balance taste of sour, spicy, salty and sweet. Imagine so many types of taste in a single plate.

Blogging Live on Halloween Day at theobroma Chocolate Lounge, 1Utama
October 25, 2008 by email2me · 13 Comments
Happy Halloween day to all Foodies, readers, my friends, family and everyone. After some hectic schedules of my job last week, finally I am able to take some rest especially Deepavali is around the corner. During festivals or celebration, I just couldn’t miss to visit 1 Utama. Their main hall or sub hall definitely has a nice decorations.
They have scare crows, pumpkins, bats, dead trees, crows and black cats. Usual EERIE stuffs which you could expect during a halloween day.
I didn’t go down to join the crowd directly. I just took it from from another floor on top of the celebration hall. I am actually sitting in theobrama CHOCOLATE LOUNGE.
The place looks a bit classy at first. But after you checkout their menu, it is kinda reasonable. A few pictures below showing their ambience and setup.
All the furnitures were brown in color and come with a quite comfortable cushion leather seats.
Basically this lounge is serving and selling anything that got to do with chocolates. Their chocolates are hand crafted and also came with many type of flavors and shape. At the same time they also sell chocolate drinks, pastries and also some light snacks.
I ordered myself a a SNOW WHITE which is a hot Belgian White chocolate in a mug n warmer. They do charge extra for serving it in a Mug ‘n’ Warmer.
RM12.90 and just the cup only without the warmer is RM9.90. Basically you are paying for a mini stove use and a small candle below it which constantly keep your chocolate drink warm.
The taste is so smooth and the white chocolate come with its milky taste makes you fly …..
Next to is is another glass of my drinks which is the MS Choco Frappe. It is a Dark Belgian Chocolate ice blended drink. Dark Belgian Chocolate come with a bit of bitter taste and strong in chocolate aroma wheras the white chocolate come with milky taste.
It comes with a cold whipped cream on top and also some dark belgian chocolate flakes. RM12.90
My chocolate espresso cake which got melted in less than 1 minute. Before my eye when I am trying to adjust my camera, the cake suddenly collapse a side. Then the chocolate layer suddenly turn into liquid chocolates. RM8.90
They are actually famous for their chocolate fondue which I can’t finish it alone. So I decided to pick a cake instead to go with my drinks. After this visit, I may not want to eat or taste chocolate for at least 1/2 year. I just had too much in a day. lol ….. If I order another drink, I definitely get diabetes very soon. ~.~”

Kafe Aik Hwa - Ah Sai Economy Rice In Perak Road
October 23, 2008 by email2me · 9 Comments
Penang …… commonly know to people as the hawker foods heaven by tourist and outstation folks. But to us which came from the island we always run out of idea what to have for lunch or dinner. I guess we are too pampered with all these choices. So normally if I ran out of idea of what to eat for lunch/brunch (Breakfast + Lunch), I’ll go for economy rice.
One of the regular shop which I will visit would be an old shop located at the busy Jalan Perak. This shop have been operating for the last 30 years (if not mistaken). The shop is constantly crowded and the foods are always hot.The shop which I mentioning about is Kafe Aik Hwa.
The ambiance are very old school as it haven’t change much since it is opened till to date. The tables and chairs were made of stainless steels and marble tables mix with some of it fully stainless steel.
Inside this kopitiam, there are only one stall which selling only economy rice. Ai Sai Economy Rice have been selling for a few generations.
Ah Sai Economy Rice is very famous for its asam stingray curry which they cook daily and sold out at the same day without any left overs. In fact most of their foods don’t have any left overs. All the foods are constantly warm as they just cook a portion enough to sell at that period. When finish, immediately they cook it again at the back. You can opt to DIY to choose your own dish or they prepare for you. If they prepare for you, all you need to do is just point and it will be serve to your table.
From Top Left : Home Made Sardines, Deep Fried Minced Meat Cake Cook With Ketchup and Cucumber and Stir Fried KangKung Belacan
From Bottom Left : Roast Porks, Soya Sauce Chicken and Curry Fish
From bottom left counter clockwise : Kembung Fish Curry, Pomfret Fish Curry, Steam Fish and Stir Fried Kangkung Belacan
Fried Lala With Chili and Garlic
Stingray Curry …. Look at the gravy …. Eventhough it is diluted … but the taste are superb …. I can even drink it as soup. It is there for you take as much as you want provided you can finish it. At the back is Chinese pork roll (Loh Bak).
On the top rack, those green packets were steam otak-otak
At the bottom right, you can see the whole piece of pork trotter there. You can choose which part you want and they’ll chop it for you.
The rest of the dishes ……. I guess by looking at the pictures, you know what it is ….. Too many to list down …
The one in the middle is pork balls. (BAK WAN) Recommended!
My deep fried pork balls (BAK WAN). This is nice to be taken with the stingray curry. The pork ball can absorb the curry if you soak it in the gravy.
Chinese Pork Roll …. Loh Bak… full with spice, onions and tight wrapping of pork strips under the bean curd skins.
Curry Fu Pok
Crunchy skins roast pork … A perfect cut of the roast porks
The best stingray curry in penang
