Remark:
The herbal strong is not as strong as normal Klang and KL Bak Kut Teh. The soup is having slight herbal smell and taste. It comes with enoki mushrooms, clam and some pork ribs. Most of the customers that patron here came from Singapore. I guess Singaporean like their bak kut teh soup to be clear? From what I’ve tried in the past, Singaporean bak kut teh is pepper soup.

  1. Thank you for this great site for foodies!

I finally took the time to try out this Soon
Soon Huat BKT yesterday. I arrived at 11.30am in the pouring rain on my motorcycle from Sg.

The restaurant was filled with about 15 people presumably cos its still too early for lunch and its pouring.

I pretty young thing whom I initially mistook as a patron queueing for food turned to ask my order in mandarin “Do you want additional toppings.”

I scanned the top of the servery table and gawked at the array of options. Pig intestine, soya bean strips, Inoki mushroom, button mushroom, tau-pok, the list goes on. Phew this iis going to be a pig out session.

I plumb for Inoki, taupok, bean strips and button mushroom. I think I overdid.

I took a seat on the outside walkway and let my mind and eyes wonder over the deserted street and the landmarking Tamans Sentosa water tower. The rain has eased up into a fine mist that kept the air fresh and cool – prime BKT weather!

Miss PYT plonked down a small saucer of dark sauce with red chilly and a bowl of rice. The sauce is neither too thick nor thin and the chilly looks freshing cut. The combination smells great tho I thought to myself that the chilly does look like the ornamental type served in Sg which is not spicy at all. See, here in Sg, if you want spicy chilly, you got to ask for chilli padi -so its all or nothing at all.

The BKT came served in a sizzling clay pot that quickly de-sizzled within 20 seconds. Before I gorge down, I arranged the food for a photo shoot for use later. No pics needed here as its tha same as the excellent shots posted here.

    I gorged down everyting.

My fear that the chilli would be a dud eased; the dark sauce and chilli was great. The sauce was very mildly sweet and fragrant while the chilli was just spicy enough without burning you up. Perfect.

The bean strip was a tad stiff which a little longer dunking in the soup resolves easily. The pork was not the super tender smooth-off-the-bone kind. Just tear off easily and yet with enough body to give a slight chewy texture. Nice.

The soup is as described by the main article here. Its clear and not too herbal. U would like it a little stronger and thicker. Garlicky fragrance is conspicuously low – could do with more.

And there are only 4 small pieces of pork. Sad.

The combination of all the options are nice but a little to much as it overshadow the main BKT. If only the option served are halved in quantity. Perhaps I should not have ordered so much of it.

The cost of my indulgence is RM20.20. A tad on the expensive side.
Overall, I would rate this as 6.5/10.

I rather prefer the one at Pengerang, Sungei Rengit. The taste on that one I rate at 9/10. I am reserving the last point for the one that can out-point it. Taht it costs only RM6.50 with the same options makes it a lot more palatable; albeit the potion is smaller, but perfect for one.

Would I recommend SSH? BKT is a very personal thing but for me, I won’t be visiting it again not because its not good but because there are so many other options available. I will, however, be going back to Pengerang for that version even though its way further away.

Thx Malaysia for your hospitality and the happy food hunting ground! My hunt for that 1 extra pointer continues …

    1. BRO,

Thanks for your comments. BKT rocks in Klang and KL where they origin from. If you are a BKT lover, do drop me a text and I will recommend you the best in town. 😀

  2. Restoran Soon Huat at 11 Jalan Sutera Satu, Taman Sentosa, JB left an indelible mark on my mind… its service is downright atrocious!!! The male boss merely scribbled the total amount for our consumption on a receipt when I requested for a breakdown on the items ordered. When I repeated my request since it was not presented, he gave a verbal listing instead, in a hasty, relunctant & yelling tone. Just then, a woman ( apparently a husband & wife team ) interrupted, who claimed nobody does their sums better than her! Worst, her arrogant cutting remark was ” If you’re not happy, just vanish & best, forever “. Naturally, this is not an eatery worth re-visiting.
